Everton falls to a 4-0 defeat to Premier League leaders Arsenal
Wednesday evening at the Emirates Stadium, Premier League leaders Arsenal defeated Everton 4-0.
Despite a promising start for the Blues, the home team scored two goals in the closing five minutes of the first quarter to deal a critical one-two blow.

The Gunners’ Bukayo Saka scored the game’s opening goal with their first shot on target, while a VAR judgement reversed an on-field offside call to enable Gabriel Martinelli’s goal to stand in first-half stoppage time.
The Toffees fought once again after the break, but Martin degaard added a third and Martinelli scored a late fourth for Arsenal, giving the hosts a five-point lead at the top of the table.
Michael Keane was given his first Premier League start of the season in lieu of Conor Coady following the weekend’s loss to Aston Villa, as Sean Dyche made one substitution.

The Blues manager, who began his tenure at the club with a historic 1-0 home victory against Arsenal last month, urged his players to “meet and exceed what [Arsenal] provide and take the game on,” and it was his team who dominated the opening exchanges.
Neal Maupay had the first shot on goal less than seven minutes into the match, but Aaron Ramsdale easily parried the Frenchman’s 20-yard attempt before collecting the rebound.
Moments later, the first of a succession of Everton counterattacks in the first half was launched, with Onana regaining control in midfield and finding Abdoulaye Doucoure to surge into Arsenal territory. He found Dwight McNeil in the left channel, and the winger’s low cross reached Neal Maupay, who failed to test Ramsdale with a flicked attempt.

Before the half-hour mark, the Blues posed a threat with an equally quick onslaught. Again, under the direction of Idrissa Gana Gueye, the ball was pushed to the left channel, where Doucoure crossed for Maupay, who was thwarted by Gabriel before he could shoot.
The first goal finally came on the opposite end of the field with Arsenal’s first serious opportunity after forty minutes. Saka pounced on Oleksandr Zinchenko’s ball into Everton’s penalty area and blasted a shot past Jordan Pickford into the top corner of the net.
It was a harsh blow, but things were going to worsen before intermission.

Saka stole the ball from Gana 20 yards from the goal during first-half stoppage time, and Martinelli was able to beat Pickford with a low effort as the ball fell into his path. The goal would be called offside on the field, but a VAR call would overturn the ruling, adding to Everton’s difficulties.
Maupay fired an opportune half-volley from 25 yards that sailed over the crossbar as Dyche’s troops emerged for the second half with a battling spirit.
Demarai Gray and Ben Godfrey were brought as Everton’s second and third substitutes just before the hour mark, after Gana was replaced by Mason Holgate at halftime.

This double substitution nearly elicited an immediate response when, in the very next attack, McNeil danced past Xhaka in midfield and forced Ramsdale into a diving save before Zinchenko cleared the danger with Doucoure agonisingly out of reach.
Degaard converted Leandro Trossard’s cross from the left channel in the 71st minute, while Martinelli doubled his score late in the match to clinch a terrible night in the capital.
