India W defeats Sri Lanka W with a resounding 82 runs led by Harmanpreet and Mandhana
The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match between India and Sri Lanka took place in Dubai. Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of India, won the toss and chose to bat first in this game. The Sri Lankan team was reduced to 90 runs and was unable to muster a significant comeback, therefore the Indian team responded with 172 runs.
India will play their last group match against six-time champion Australia on Sunday after winning their last two games in a row.
Australia proved that they are there to be taken if India can display their talent, as they defeated Pakistan by 31 runs before Australia reached their goal in just over 14 overs. They do, however, have dangerous players like all-rounder Kavisha Dilhari, skipper Chamari Athapaththu, and Harshitha Samarawickrama who will be seeking to leave their mark on this tournament by pulling off a major shock.
With Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh having failed twice, Shafali Verma not appearing to be at her most potent, and Harmanpreet Kaur leaving the pitch due to injury during the match against Pakistan, there will be questions about the batting condition of several Indian players. Still, India would benefit from the better bowling displayed by players like Arundhati Reddy and Shreyanka Patil. All five of India’s bowlers produced a wicket, with Patil taking two of her own while Reddy claimed three against Pakistan.
In the batting department, Jemimah Rodrigues was elevated to the number three spot and, together with Shafali Verma, forged a cautious combination that made sure a loss was out of the question for an India squad desperate to win. But victory with just 7 balls remaining in a 106-run chase was viewed as a squandered chance to close the enormous NRR gap that their crushing defeat against New Zealand by 58 runs necessitated.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s side may need to win by a significant margin in order to regain the lead held by the teams above them, hence a victory may not be sufficient. They will also be watching Australia vs. New Zealand closely, but regardless of how that game plays out, India’s situation is very straightforward: losing means they’re out.
Thanks to Mandhana’s (50) and Kaur’s (fast) 52 off 27 balls, the team posted a competitive score of 172/3 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Now, it was up to the bowlers to produce, and they did not let us down.
Vishmi Gunaratne was removed for a duck by Renuka Singh on the opening ball of the second innings. In 0.2 overs, Sri Lanka was 0/1. Soon after, skipper Chamari Athapaththu was removed from the game after just managing a single. In the first 1.5 overs, Shreyanka Patil removed her. Sri Lanka scored four points. Richa Ghosh stunned Harshita Samarawickrama with Renuka Singh’s delivery. She was only able to get three. After 2.2 overs, Sri Lanka was 6/3. Anushka Sanjeewani (20) and Kavisha Dilhari (21) put up some fight and shared a partnership of 37 runs before Asha Sobhana shattered it. Anushka Sanjeewani, Sugandika Kumari (1), and Inoshi Priyadarshani (1) were all removed by Shobhana. Reddy rejected Nilakshika Silva (age 8) and Ama Kanchana (age 19).

In her four overs, she took three wickets for 19 runs, matching Shobhana’s final stats.
Udeshika Prabodhani (9), the last wicket of Sri Lanka’s innings, was taken by Deepti Sharma.
Shreyanka Patil and Deepti Sharma, two spinners, each claimed one wicket. In 19.5 overs, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 90 runs.
Athapaththu: “We struggled even in the bowling. We dropped catches. We didn’t bowl in the right areas. Batters including me and Vishmi didn’t do a good job. We have to rethink what we have to do and bounce back. The first game is important in this tournament. It was low-scoring and as a batting unit, we had to chase. After that the dressing room was a little down. I try to lift them. Happy with the bowling unit in the last two games. We have to improve our batting.”

Harmanpreet , Player of the Match: “We just wanted to go with the momentum, Shafali and Smriti gave us a good start. Credit goes to them. They were there on the pitch, calculative, didn’t throw the wicket away. Jemi and I, we just wanted to score seven-eight runs an over. It was one of the days when I was in my zone, whenever ball was in my zone, I went hard. I was only thinking about positives. This wicket was not true to batting, you have to keep rotating the strike. Once ball is in your zone you can go for it. It’s not like you can keep swinging the bat. We were there and didn’t throw the wicket away. Really happy for the team.”
