Gamescom 2022: Dune Awakening an open world survival MMO announced

Dune fans now have more than one game to look forward to after a 20-year absence. Following the announcement of Dune: Spice Wars for 2021, Norwegian publisher Funcom disclosed at this year’s Gamescom that it is developing a new MMO set in Frank Herbert’s legendary sci-fi world. The trailer released by the corporation during the event did not feature any gameplay.

Instead, we witness a figure, likely the game’s version of Paul Atreides, chanting Dune’s famed “fear is the mind-killer” slogan while watching a sandworm consume a spice harvester, with the end title card promising an open-world survival experience. More information about the project may be found on the game’s Steam website. Players will be able to explore the arid planet in quest of spice. You must defend your harvester against opportunistic robbers and the occasional sandworm. Funcom has not announced a release date for Dune: Awakening, but the game’s website encourages players to join up for a beta test.

duneWhile the plot of the game has not been revealed in detail, we do know that it will take place in a massive and open replica of Arrakis shared by thousands of people. Funcom also made a statement on the game on their official website, describing it as a “unique and ambitious Open World Survival MMO” that combines the “grit and ingenuity of survival games with the social engagement of large-scale, persistent multiplayer games.”

Enter uncharted sectors and be the first to find mysteries and treasures before the coriolis storms move the sands and change the landscape once again. Escape enormous sandworms, construct your house from refuge to formidable base, and explore the dunes in famous universe vehicles.

duneHunt for spice flowers and deploy your harvester, then defend it from opposing forces in fast-paced, lethal combat that smoothly transitions from armoured groundcars to ornithopters in the skies. Plot your ascension to power and increase your influence in the Landsraad through cautious intrigue.

Rui Casais, CEO of Funcom, told reporters: “Funcom has been pushing boundaries in the MMO genre for 20 years. It’s where our roots are. We built on that with Conan Exiles, our first big success in the survival space. With Dune: Awakening we’re bridging the survival and MMO genres to create something truly unique and ambitious within a universe we’re all so passionate about.”

Sam Rappaport, VP of Interactive Media at Legendary Entertainment, added, “Dune: Awakening truly promises to bring the world of Dune to life in an exciting new way. We are thrilled to be creating this with a partner like Funcom, who is so adept at capturing the rich detail and wonder of cinematic worlds for the gaming audience.”

duneDune: Awakening will be available on the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. With the Beta already scheduled and wishlist the game on Steam right now. More mysteries will be divulged on the website in the coming months.
