T20WC: India wins warm-up match against Australia by six runs

The Indian squad defeated the main challenger for the championship, the Australian team, by 6 runs in the T20 World Cup 2022 warm-up match.

On Monday, India overcame Australia by six runs in a warm-up game at The Gabba in Brisbane. Mohammed Shami bowled a magnificent last over. Shami went on to scoop up three wickets in the 20th over with 11 runs needed off the last over to establish his destruction capabilities and win a dramatic triumph for the Indian team.

Australia got off to a flying start, chasing a goal of 187 runs, as Mitchell Marsh went all blasting after starting the batting with skipper Aaron Finch. Marsh smashed a quickfire 18-ball 35 with Finch to set a 41-run partnership before the Australian skipper grabbed command of the run pursuit.

The Australians were 171 for 4, needing 16 runs off two overs. After a good half-century, Aaron Finch and Tim David both fell off good balls. Earlier, when summoned to bat, the Indians took an early lead, with KL Rahul in particular taking an aggressive approach from the start. India had raced to 56 for no loss by the conclusion of the fifth over, with Rohit on 1 off 5 and Rahul on 49 off 25. He immediately reached fifty off 27 balls before Rohit joined in, hitting Glenn Maxwell for a 6 and a 4.

In the second to last over, Australia needed 11 runs to win, and Virat Kohli showed off his exceptional fielding by taking a one-handed catch of Pat Cummins. Ashton Agar was run out without opening his score on the very next delivery of the over. Shami took out Josh Inglis for one run on the fifth ball of the over and bowled out the hosts for 180. Shami bowled a remarkable last-over performance of 2, 2, W W W W, helping India to a 6-run victory over Australia.

Rohit Sharma Indian captain stated: “We batted well, towards the end we could have added 10-15 more. We wanted to stay till the end, which Surya did. It was a good pitch where you could trust the bounce which our batters did. You have to be smart while playing with big boundaries. Getting them is important but getting singles and twos to accumulate 8-9 in an over is just as key. We have focused on that since Perth. We need to improve at the death. We need to change lengths and tactics. Sometimes hitting the deck is a good option. Overall, it was a good game. It was a good pitch and their batting put pressure on us. Bowling Shami at the death was always the plan and you saw what he did.”

Australian Aaron Finch said: “We haven’t capitalised in the chase in the last 3-4 overs. The bowling was good, was happy with the bat too and get a few runs. Richardson was fantastic, we have great depth in the fast bowling department. Zampa and Agar were great too. Can’t wait for the New Zealand game. There will be some nerves but should be exciting.”

  • India: 186/7 (KL Rahul 57, Suryakumar Yadav 50; Kane Richardson 4/34)
  • Australia: 180 all out in 19 overs (Aaron Finch 76; Shami 3/4, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2/20)
