“It’s a fight i’d like to see again,” says Dana White on Makhachev vs Oliveira

With a knockout of Beneil Dariush at UFC 289, Charles Oliveira cemented his position as the top lightweight contender. In a rematch, he’s still a long chance to defeat incumbent champion Islam Makhachev.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s apprentice has proven himself on the international scene by dethroning and defeating Charles Oliveira. He then defended his championship against Alexander Volkanovski, the top P4P fighter in the UFC. Makhachev disclosed his plans to challenge for the welterweight belt in a recent interview with Daniel Cormier.

Daniel Cormier is friends with Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov. The previous champion has always praised and supported the Dagestani fighters. However, he recently revealed that, following his strong victory at UFC 289, Charles Oliveira is not far behind Makhachev. For the first time since losing his belt against Islam Makhachev, Charles Oliveira fought. Nurmagomedov’s pupil triumphed in overwhelming way against the Brazilian, strangling him out to win the championship. However, after his recent performance, even UFC president Dana White feels a rematch with Makhachev is the fight for both fighters.

Makhachev submitted Oliveira in October in Abu Dhabi to earn the UFC lightweight championship, which he defended in February with a tight decision victory against Alex Volkanovski. He’s now slated to defend his title one more at UFC 294, which takes place Oct. 21 in Abu Dhabi.

“I’m next in line, for sure. There’s nothing to be done or think, especially the way it was against Dariush,” Oliveira said. “But over these past seven or eight years of my life I’ve learned that I only have to worry about one thing, and it’s not making money or booking fights, it’s just train, rest and make it happen. ‘Macaco’ and Diego already know what I want, they know I want the belt, so let them clash heads with the organization to see what the next step is. I just want to rest and then go back to training and be ready for my next opponent. … To me, I’m next, without a shadow of a doubt. Dana has made it clear, but we can’t be so sure,” Oliveira added.

Meanwhile, Islam Makhachev believes he can go up a class and win a second UFC title. Lightweight champion Makhachev (24-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) is set to defend his championship at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 22. While defending his title is his priority, he aspires to be champ-champ. Makhachev fancies his chances against UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards (21-3 MMA, 13-2 UFC), who beat Kamaru Usman in back-to-back fights.

Max Holloway is pleased to watch former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira make a strong comeback. Oliveira (34-9 MMA, 22-9 UFC) defeated Beneil Dariush in the co-main event of UFC 289 on Saturday. Oliveira recovered from a lopsided submission defeat to Islam Makhachev (24-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) in October, and Holloway believes his dramatic finish over Dariush earned him another opportunity at the 155-pound crown.

“I think Charles is amazing, man,” Holloway told reporters of The Mac Life. “You know all the naysayers and everybody saying he’s done and blah, blah, blah? He’s getting his rightful spot in October to get that rematch, And I’m excited to watch it happen.” “Oh, brother, I think Oliveira did more than enough,” Holloway concluded.

The UFC has not yet confirmed Makhachev’s next championship defence but UFC President Dana White appears to be quite interested about a prospective rematch between Chucky Olives and the man who dethroned him, Islam Makhachev.
