Moeen Ali penalised for breaching ICC Code of Conduct

The International Cricket Council has penalised Moeen Ali for putting a “drying agent” on his bowling hand during his return Test in the Ashes series start at Edgbaston. In his first game back at first-class level in over two years, Moeen bowled 29 overs on day two. The ICC confirmed Sunday morning that Moeen had been penalised twenty-five percent of his match fee for the infraction.

The 35-year-old, who is suffering a callused spinning finger as a result of the heavy effort he has already endured in this game, sprayed a drying agent on the boundary with his right hand before entering the fray to bowl the 89th over on Saturday. The “drying agent” Moeen employed, according to the ICC, was not utilised to alter the ball’s condition.

The 36-year-old is participating in his first Test since September 2021 after being coaxed out of retirement by skipper Ben Stokes in response to fellow spinner Jack Leach’s stress fracture of the back. On day two, Moeen bowled and Travis Head was caught at short midwicket for a total of 2-124 from 29 overs.

An ICC statement said: “England player Moeen Ali has been fined 25% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC code of conduct during the first Test against Australia in Birmingham on Saturday. Ali was found to have breached Article 2.20 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to displaying conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game. In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Ali’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.”
