Ashes 2023: England draws fourth Test against Australia at Emirates Old Trafford

Due to continuous rain on the last day, the fourth Test of the Ashes 2023 series between England and Australia at Emirates Old Trafford concluded in a stalemate. The outcome ensured that Australia, which had a 2-1 lead going into this match, maintained the Ashes. Australia has won the Ashes three times in a row and hasn’t suffered a series defeat since 2015. Since winning the Ashes in 2017–18, Australia has dominated the proceedings, drawing the series just once—at England in 2019.

In a contest that England totally dominated, there were just 30 overs allowed over the final two days, and none at all on Sunday. With the draw, Australia would lead the series 2-1 going into the decisive game, which will take place at the Oval on Thursday. With a win there, Australia will become the first team to win a series in England since 2001.

England, on the other hand, would feel unfairly treated by the result considering that they only needed 5 wickets on the last day of the Test to win and score whatever runs Australia would have gained an advantage. Given their unfavourable position going into Day 5 of the Test match, Australia was loud about their desire for rain. England, who had been more comfortable with the series as the day went on, got off to a strong start by dismissing Australia for a respectable total of 317 runs in just over a day of play. After dismissing the visitors for 317, England sped to a massive 592 in just 107.4 overs, and then in their opponents’ second innings, they reduced them to 214-5.

Stokes refused to concede that his team’s chances of winning may have increased if they had declared their first innings earlier or increased their overrate to sped up play. There will be quiet celebrations, according to Pat Cummins, as his side is still focused on improving upon the drew series they accomplished in 2019.

With fellow all-rounder Mitchell Marsh in excellent form and Australia considering a recall for spinner Todd Murphy, Green’s position at The Oval is in jeopardy. Nevertheless, Green is certain that Australia will be entirely focused on earning their first Ashes series victory in England in 22 years, whether he plays or not. Four years ago, Australia was leading the series 2-2 coming into The Oval but may have paid the price for some overzealous celebrations before the game when England defeated Australia in south London.

Stokes’ team will now attempt to secure a series tie by winning the fifth and final Test at The Kia Oval. Stokes is sad that a thrilling Ashes series has been denied a fifth Test, but he insists his squad is still keen to complete their red-ball summer on a high note.

England can no longer win the series outright, but they can deny Australia their first away Ashes victory since 2001 by defeating them at The Oval in the fifth Test.
